The Central Tenets Behind Constitution

May 11, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: It could be encouraging if the majority of American citizens would regrasp the theory of freedom which engineered the U.S. Constitution. Those 18th century founders shared a common ethos about the relationship between a citizen and his government.

The Six Central Tenets that guided the design of the U.S. Constitution were: Individualism: “Man is an end in himself, not a means to the ends of others.”

Freedom: “The absence of external constraints.”

Equality: “The government is blind with respect to the Individual.”

Capitalism: “The means of production and distribution need be in private hands.”

Secularism: “Religion plays no real role in Civil Society.”

Pluralism: “A tolerance for a wide variety of beliefs and modes of living.”

Like a wedding vow periodically reaffirming an everlasting bond between two people, the relationship between the governed and the government needs a reaffirmation as well.

When can we have one?
