W&L Lax Teams Fall
Both the Washington and Lee University men’s and women’s lacrosse teams concluded their seasons with losses to Christopher Newport University in the NCAA Division III tournament on Sunday afternoon.
The W&L men lost 13-12 in the Round of 16 in Newport News, while the W&L women came up short 8-7 in overtime in the second round.
In the men’s game, the Generals (16-6) led 8-4 at halftime, but CNU (18-3) battled back and took a 10-9 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Captains led by two goals with 5:20 left in the game. W&L’s James Haley scored the final goal of the game, but the Generals weren’t able to complete the comeback.
Haley and Garrett Ferguson led the Generals with four points each, with Haley scoring four goals, while Luke Caldwell had three. In goal for W&L, sophomore JJ Kim made 10 saves.
W&L reached the Round of 16 by earning a 19-10 win over Gettysburg College (12-5) in the second round on Saturday in Newport News. Haley tallied eight points on four goals and four assists, while Ferguson scored five goals. In goal, Kim made 11 saves.
Haley, a senior, finished his playing career fourth in program history in goals (167) and assists (116) and third in points (283). He also finished the season with the most points in a season in program history, with 115.
The Generals’ 16 wins were the third-most in a season in program history. Guiding the Generals is Gene McCabe, in his 20th year as head coach.
The W&L women (15-5), who also had a bye in the first round, saw their season come to a close when CNU (15-6) erased a 7-4 second-half deficit by scoring the final four goals, including the game winner with 2:40 left in overtime. CNU’s Brooklynn Peterson finished a feed from Brookelyn Morrison for the decisive score.
Lara Baki led W&L with three goals and an assist, while teammate Kelly Polacek added two goals and an assist. W&L senior goalie Iman Haddad made 16 saves.
Guiding the Generals is fourth-year head coach Maddie Coleman.

W&L Women’s Netters Advance, Men Fall
The W&L women’s tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals in the NCAA Division III tournament, while the W&L men concluded their season in the second round.
After receiving a bye in the first round, the W&L women (21-2) earned a 4-1 win over Trinity University (17-2) on Saturday in Atlanta, Ga. The Generals then battled to a 4-3 victory over Emory University (14-7) in the Round of 16 on Sunday, also in Atlanta.
W&L, guided by 14th-year head coach Erin Ness, will face No. 4 Wesleyan (Conn.) (20-2) in the national quarterfinals next Monday at the Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The W&L men (12-11), who also had a bye in the first round, wrapped up the season with a 4-0 loss to Carnegie Mellon University (15-5) in the second round on Saturday at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania.
The Generals are coached by David Detwiler, in his 25th year.
