Local Seats On Ballots This Fall

In addition to congressional elections and state constitutional questions being on the ballot this Nov. 3, there will also be local elections for 15 Rockbridge area offices.

In Lexington, City Council members whose terms expire this year are Nicholas Betts, David Sigler and Chuck Smith. Candidates who have filed to run for Lexington City Council are Sigler and Amber Ansted. Terms are for four years.

As the Lexington School Board completes the transition from appointed to elected members, the terms expire this year for the last two appointed members, Katie Shester and LaTonya Douglas. New terms are for four years.

Glasgow Town Council members whose terms expire this year are Natalie Harris, Marcie Hill and Brandall Branch. Terms are for two years.

In Goshen, four-year terms expire this year for Mayor Tom McCraw and Town Council members Michel Hicks, Chris Robertson and Derrick Ogden.

Buena Vista has two special elections to fill unexpired terms – one on City Council and one on the School Board – both of which are for one year. Steve Webb resigned the City Council seat that’s currently being held on an interim basis by William Kerr. Mack Felts is the interim School Board member who filled a vacancy created by the death of Wayne Flint.

There is a special election for the Walkers Creek District seat on the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors. Toria Brown was appointed last week to serve as Walkers Creek supervisor until the results of the special election on Nov. 3 are certified. Jay Lewis was re-elected to this seat last November but that election was invalidated when he didn’t take the oath of office in the legally allotted amount of time. Whoever is elected in November will serve the remaining three years of this four-year term.

The deadline for candidates to file for the Lexington, Goshen and Glasgow elections and the Buena Vista School Board special election is June 16. The filing deadline for the Buena Vista City Council and Board of Supervisors special elections is Aug. 14.
