Recently several members of the Green Hills Garden Club attended the Virginia Federation of Garden Club’s Shenandoah District spring meeting at Culpepper. They came home with five first place awards that the club earned for activities in 2025. Four of these awards went on to win blue ribbons at the state level.
The district awards were for Youth Environmental Education, a joint project with Boxerwood helping fourth grade students plant tree seedlings and follow their growth for several years before the trees are planted in a local setting.
Floral Designs for the Community was a project where the club made 33 floral arrangements for a 50th class reunion. Then, the reunion host donated the arrangements back to the club which delivered them to AVIVA Baldwin Park Assisted Living in Staunton for the residents to enjoy in their dining room.
The third and forth projects were also joint projects with Boxerwood: Conservation/ Environmental where club members planted saplings with Lylburn Downing Middle School students at the Baker Farm in a riparian buffer to improve water quality; and Civic Beautification/Achievement where club members and seventh grade students planted crocus at Jordans Point for community beautification.
The final district award was for the club’s yearbook which has a wealth of information about floral design, gardening tips and garden related activities around the state.
The club has members from north Rockbridge County and southern Augusta County and while it only has 16 active members, it is a busy club, said a spokeswoman.
