Fewer than half of the registered voters in Lexington cast ballots in the reelection of the mayor and three incumbents on city council to new four-year terms. Clerk of the Court Harry Wright blamed “a total lack of interest” on the voters’ part for the low turnout. - Ora Trout Engleman, a former mayor of Lexington, died in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. He had just celebrated his 90th birthday. - Lexington police were investigating a break-in that occurred at Lylburn Downing School. The only items reported missing were a set of 17 keys taken from the secretary’s office and a half-filled box of composition books.

Andy Bryan, principal of Rockbridge County High School, accepted a position as the assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction for the Lee County, N.C., school system.
- Gov. Tim Kaine appointed Joan Manley to the vice chairwoman position on the Oldstead Board, which monitors laws and studies barriers and challenges concerning community integration of Virginians with Disabilities Act and reports their recommendations to the governor. - The Kerrs Creek General Store, in operation for over 100 years, closed its doors for good.
