Celebrated every May, Older Americans Month (OML) is led by the Administration for Community Living. Established in 1963, OAM is a time to recognize older Americans’ contributions, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm commitments to serving older adults in our communities.
This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” focuses on prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as cornerstones of healthy aging. It encourages older adults to take an active role in their health — advocating for themselves, accessing preventive care, and making informed decisions that support independence.
This Older Americans Month, try taking a few steps to champion health and advance healthy aging.
How can you take charge of your health at every age?
• Stay up to date on preventive care and screenings.
• Build and maintain social connections that support emotional well-being.
• Choose nutritious, minimally processed foods.
• Incorporate regular physical activity to maintain strength and mobility.
• Practice daily habits that support mental health and resilience.
Do those steps seem overwhelming? You can break them down even further. Take a 10-minute walk most days. Schedule an annual wellness visit. Go to bed 15 minutes earlier. Confidence grows from small, practical wins – not sweeping change. And, championing your health doesn’t need to be boring or bland. Walk with a neighbor who makes you laugh. Make some salsa from tomatoes bursting with flavor in your own backyard. Meet new friends and eat a delicious meal at a VPAS Cafe. (Call 540261-7474 for details, or visit vpas.info/vpas-cafes.)
Championing your health looks different for everyone, and every small step counts. Whether it’s moving a little more, connecting with others, eating well, or keeping up with preventive care, these choices help support independence and well-being at every age. This May, choose one step that feels right for you — and take it. You might inspire others to follow along.
