LLL To Celebrate Gift Of Motherhood

In honor of Mother’s Day, the local La Leche League will celebrate the gift of motherhood at the Tuesday, May 12, meeting.

The meeting will start at 10:30 a.m. in the library of the Grace Episcopal Church located at 123 W. Washington St, Lexington. There is elevator accessibility at the back of the church..

Breastfeeding creates a special bond between mother and baby as well as providing the best possible nutrients, said a spokeswoman. Breast milk contains protective substances which are critical for the baby’s gut biome such as lactoferrin (to transport and absorb iron), secretory antibodies (IgA IgG) and inflammatory cells - leukocytes or white blood cells. Premature babies especially are vulnerable without mother’s milk and can develop a life-threatening illness called NEC (necrotizing enterocolitis). Without breast milk their intestinal tract starts to become very sick and they are then unable to absorb nutrients. If babies are too weak to suckle, doctors will recommend that mothers pump their breast milk or use donor breast milk available from several milk banks in Virginia to then be fed to the babies.
