RC Softball Wins Two Of Three

The Rockbridge County High School softball team went 2-1 last week, defeating Rocktown and Parry McCluer before falling at Alleghany.

The Wildcats (7-3 overall, 4-4 district) started the week with a 17-3 home win in five innings over Rocktown. They then cruised to a 22-0 victory in five innings at PM. (See separate story). RC wrapped up the week with a 10-0 home loss in five innings to Shenandoah District rival Alleghany.

Against Rocktown, the Wildcats got their offense going right away, racking up eight runs in the first inning and adding four runs in the second to extend their lead to 12-0.

The Raptors scored all three of their runs in the top of the fourth before the Wildcats scored their final runs in the bottom of the fourth.

RC recorded nine hits, while Rocktown had two. Kayleigh Rosson and Landrey Campbell led the Wildcats with two hits each, while Page Wright had one hit and led the Wildcats with three RBIs. Recording one hit each for Rocktown were Leilany Ponce and Imani Banks.

Senior Sadie Moore pitched the first three innings for the Wildcats, striking out nine while allowing no hits, no walks and no runs. On the mound for the final two innings was junior Harley Tomlin, striking out three while surrendering two hits, two walks and three unearned runs.

Rocktown committed three errors, while RC had one.

AHS 10, RC 0

Alleghany pitcher Emma Skidmore threw a no-hitter, striking out six and allowing no walks to lead the Cougars (9-4 overall, 5-3 district) to a 10-0 win over the Wildcats on Friday in Lexington.

The Cougars scattered their runs across the games, scoring one run in the first, two in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth, and four in the fifth.

Alleghany racked up 12 hits, led by Kaylee Nicely with three, while Skidmore, Ava Howard and Paige Webb each had two.

Moore pitched all five innings for RC, striking out five while allowing the 12 hits, two walks and 10 runs (eight earned).

RC committed three errors, while Alleghany had none.

The Wildcats were scheduled to play host to Staunton yesterday and will continue district action at Waynesboro on Friday before playing at home against Stuarts Draft on Tuesday, with both games starting at 5:30 p.m.
