Junior midfielder Lucy Boller-Pinkham scored five goals to lead the Rockbridge County High School girls soccer team to a 7-1 road win over Shenandoah District Alleghany on Friday night in Covington.
With the victory, the Wildcats improved to 2-6-0, while the Cougars fell to 2-7-0, both overall and in the district.
“This was a great team win,” said RC head coach Carrie Dietz. “We were dealing with some adversity. Some of the girls weren’t feeling the greatest. It was hot. Their field is right beside a river, so there were a lot of bugs. We adjusted really well.”
The Wildcats dominated the first half, taking a 5-0 halftime lead. RC added two more goals in the second half before Alleghany scored its only goal in the last 10 minutes of the game.
Scoring one goal each for the Wildcats were Anna Feldman and Elsa Kerin-Rice, while Allison Licona-Asto led RC with three assists.
RC junior goalkeeper Caden Marshall made three saves. For part of the game, she switched positions with her best friend, junior midfielder Emily Jones. While in goal, Jones made two saves.
After the game, Dietz said Alleghany head coach Bob Donnan told her, “You can tell your team likes to play together as a unit.”
The Wildcats were scheduled to play at Staunton last night and will continue district action at home against Waynesboro on Friday before playing at Stuarts Draft on Tuesday. Both nights will start with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity games scheduled to follow at 7.
