High Bridge

Visitors this past Sunday at High Bridge Presbyterian Church included three Virginia Military Institute rugby team members, and Coach John McCoy reported his team was ranked ninth in the country this past season. Also visiting the service was Richard Jones of Charlottesville, grandson of Nancy Hostetter.

Roy and Connie Powell spent Saturday in Christiansburg visiting their daughter and son-in-law, Courtney and Chris Thomas. There they watched grandchildren Bettie, Marie and Levi taking part in school sports activities between the rain showers.

Small Church meets Thursday, April 30, at 7 p.m. also at the fellowship hall.

The evening circle meets Tuesday, May 5, at 6 with Garnette Teass. Bible study will be led by Ruth Ann Parsons.

The afternoon circle meets Tuesday, May 12, with Sue Braford at 12:30 with Bible study led by Connie Powell.

The last day of Sunday school this spring season will be May 17, and starting May 24, worship begins at 10 a.m. for the summer months.

Confirmation classes began this past Sunday after worship and will continue for several weeks.

The two adult Sunday school classes recently combined into one class taught by the Rev. Dr. Amy Willis. The subject is the Dead Sea Scrolls.

The Presbyterian Women’s mission for the second quarter is Lisa’s House. Donations can be dropped into the box at the narthex at church or delivered to Lisa’s House. Betsy Shepherd is the mission chairperson and will have a list of items needed.

Scholarship Sunday will be May 17. Christy Black is in charge of accepting applications for those moving on to middle school or high school or graduating high school or college.

Congratulations to two couples who celebrated their 66th wedding anniversaries in Stoner Hollow this past month — Lloyd and Esther Pennington, and Wayne Lee and Annette Hickman.

The food pantry will open promptly at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, and close at 11 a.m. Special requests for the month of April are peanut butter and jelly, as well as egg cartons.
