Rockbridge County’s five garden clubs are busy preparing for the annual plant sale on Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to noon at Hopkins Green, the proceeds from which cover the cost of the hanging baskets in Lexington. Meanwhile, employees at Shaner’s Greenhouse have potted the more than 40 hanging baskets for display on Main Street beginning May 8. The color scheme is red, white, and blue — a nod to the nation’s 250th birthday this summer. Now in its seventh generation of operation, Shaner’s is led by Mitchell (left) and his wife Laura (right) and their two sons Gabe (second from left) and Jackson (third from right). Other staff include Chris Smith, Keaton Smith, David Smith, and Frankie Riley. Shaner’s is one of the oldest businesses in Virginia still operating on its original property.
