Day In K Support Appreciated

United Way of Rockbridge marked a major milestone last week as “A Day in K” celebrated its 10th anniversary, welcoming approximately 50 families to Maury River Middle School for an evening of connection, exploration, and community.

The free event, held April 22 from 5:30 to 7 p.m., was designed to help rising kindergartners and their families prepare for the transition to school.

Founded a decade ago through the leadership of United Way of Rockbridge, the local school systems and the Rockbridge Teacher Education consortium at Washington and Lee University and Southern Virginia University, A Day in K has grown into a beloved annual tradition in Rockbridge County. The event gives young children the chance to explore school buses, meet local teachers and school staff, connect with PTAs, and learn about the wide range of community agencies and resources available to support their families.

“Reaching this 10th anniversary is a proud moment for United Way of Rockbridge, but what truly inspires us is knowing that hundreds of children have started their school journeys a little more ready and a little less nervous because of this event,” said Jennifer Dent, executive director of United Way of Rockbridge. “We can’t wait to see what the next decade brings.”

The partnership of Lexington City Schools, Buena Vista City Public Schools, and Rockbridge County Public Schools and their commitment to the children and families in our area continues to make A Day in K a success year after year, she said.

United Way of Rockbridge extends its deep gratitude to the dedicated planning committee whose hard work brings this event to life each year. Committee members are Rebecca Walters, Tracy Hinty, Haley Sigler, Kim Kearney, Kim Pollock, Kelly Fujiwara, Janet Lemmer, Jordan Clark, Terri Flint, and Jennifer Dent. A special thank you to Kelly Fujiwara for heading the recruitment of local vendors and community agencies.

As A Day in K enters its second decade, United Way of Rockbridge looks forward to continuing to build on the event’s legacy of connecting families with the resources and relationships that help every child start school ready to thrive.
