RC Lax Teams Split With Glass

Thursday, April 23 -- The Rockbridge County High School lacrosse teams split a pair of varsity matchups with visiting E.C. Glass, with the girls claiming a 21-5 victory after the boys had fallen by a 16-0 scoreline.

The evening at Prasnicki-Ross Field at Veteran Stadium also featured a celebration of the 50th anniversary of prep lacrosse in Lexington, with the first boys' team starting up in April 1976. The girls' team at RC launched 30 years ago in 1996. Several alumni and former coaches from both programs were in attendance.

In the girls' contest, the Wildcats (7-1) scored four goals in the first 45 seconds and led 7-0 inside of two minutes in cruising to the victory. Anna Nye posted four goals, seven assists and 18 draw controls for RC, while Lola Mulitalo tallied seven goals and one assist.

Emma McKnight chipped in four goals and two assists for the 'Cats, Adrianna Grue had two goals and one helper, and Sarah Edgar posted three assists. Nye and Tadara Cooper paced the defensive effort with three caused turnovers apiece.

Reed Marks tallied three goals for the Hilltoppers (2-4), and Corinne Cox recorded three caused turnovers.

Glass dominated the boys' contest, taking the lead just eight seconds into the game and shutting out the RC attack. Preston Laughon led the Hilltoppers (6-1) with five goals and one assist, while John Sorenson notched three goals and one assist, and Landry McCall registered one goal and three helpers. David Matthews turned in a 15-of-17 performance at the faceoff X, and Charlie Kershaw kept a clean sheet with six saves.

Chase Pooley played well in goal for the Wildcats (3-5), making 13 saves while yielding 12 goals in three quarters of action. Glass outshot RC 46-11 in the contest.

Both RC teams will return to action against Blacksburg on Monday. The girls are slated to play host to the Bruins at 6 p.m., while the boys will travel to Blacksburg, where the junior varsity game begins at 5:30 p.m.
