Election Results: County, Buena Vista Voters Opposed Amendment

Election Results: County, Buena Vista Voters Opposed Amendment

Rockbridge County and Buena Vista voters opposed the state constitutional amendment to temporarily redraw Virginia’s congressional districts while Lexington voters favored the measure, according to unofficial results of Tuesday’s referendum.

State-wide, the state constitutional amendment passed, with 51.45 percent of voters answering “yes” to the question, “Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia's standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?”

The state supreme court is expected to rule shortly on legal challenges to the referendum question. If the legality of the referendum is upheld, the state’s congressional districts will be redrawn for this November’s elections.

Voter turnout statewide was 47.91 percent. Of the 3,066,367 voters who cast ballots, 1,575,288 voted “yes” and 1,486,229 voted “no.”

Voter turnout in Rockbridge County was 57 percent. Voting “no” were 7,039, or 72.14 percent of those who cast ballots, to 2,719, or 27.86 percent, who voted “yes.”

In Buena Vista, 1,374, or 75.7 percent of the electorate, voted “no,” to 441, or 24.3 percent, who voted “yes.” Buena Vista’s voter turnout was 40 percent.

In Lexington, voter turnout was 44 percent. The results in Lexington were 1,173, or 61.64 percent, voting “yes” and 730, or 38.36 percent, voting “no.”
