Charlie Schmaus became the head basketball coach at Virginia Military Institute after Bill Blair accepted the head coaching job at the University of Colorado. -A waterline break in downtown Lexington resulted in a temporary flood down the section of Main Street from Preston to Nelson streets. The small service line was ruptured during sidewalk construction work. -A “bimillennial” celebration in honor of Rome’s 2,729th birthday was planned by the Latin Club at Lexington High School.

Plans were underway at Kendal to add up to 30 single family and duplex cottages and a wing of 14 apartments for a total of 44 new housing units. This would increase the number of people living at Kendal by one-third. - Washington and Lee University’s women’s lacrosse team defeated Virginia Wesleyan to clinch the top seed in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament. - Mary Harvey was named the new music director and accompanist at St. John’s United Methodist Church.
