‘Silence Isn’t Always Golden’

April 20, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: Can the Lowrys explain what happened to Trump’s inaugural promises? “The nation exists to serve its citizens … mothers and children trapped in poverty … we are one nation … their pain is our pain … we will reinforce old alliances … We must speak our minds openly, debate our disagreements honestly; but always pursue solidarity … to all Americans, in every city … you will never be ignored again.”

And Vance, accepting nomination: “He called for national unity … I think our disagreements actually make us stronger … shouldn’t we be governed by a party that is unafraid to debate ideas … The Republican Party … [is] committed to free speech and the open exchange of ideas … many of the people that I grew up with can’t afford to pay more for groceries … gas … rent … that’s exactly what Biden’s economy [gave] them …We need a leader [who] answers … to the working man … we will send our kids to war only when we must.”

Ms. Lowry, a political operative, is conveniently outraged that Virginia allowed voting for redistricting but wasn’t when Trump demanded, and got, Texas redistricted. Without a vote.

Mr. Lowry ceaselessly praises Trump.

Neither mentions the attempt to overthrow an election, the present all-out attack on the Constitution, attacks on the press, media companies, universities, ICE’s outrages. Character: multiple felony convictions. Racism, misogyny and xenophobia. Lining his pockets, while canceling Medicaid and food stamps. Judgment: Attacking Iran, citing false and contradictory reasons, to prove he’s a tough guy. $44 billion spent by April 8. His refusal to accept it was a stupid idea. “I know in my bones.”

Threatening war crimes is a war crime in itself. Always siding with Putin. The desire to be a dictator. Obvious mental health issues. Silence isn’t always golden. JOE PETITE Rockbridge County
