Rockbridge Girls Laxers Win Pair

The Rockbridge County High School girls lacrosse team eased to road victories over Patrick Henry and Franklin County last week, improving to 5-1 overall.

On Monday of last week, the Wildcats routed Patrick Henry 18-7 in Roanoke. Anna Nye racked up seven goals, three assists, 12 draw controls and five caused turnovers to pace RC against the Patriots (1-3). Emma McKnight added four goals and one assist for the ’Cats, while Lola Mulitalo finished with three goals and two helpers.

The Wildcats were also solid on the stop side, where Ellie McKnight made four saves in goal. Laura Ingram contributed to the victorious effort with four ground balls and four draw controls.

“The defense played well. They played with intensity and created many caused turnovers,” RC head coach Susan Nye said. “The offense was extremely efficient with their shooting. They also did a great job finding the open player for assists.”

The Wildcats carried their momentum into last Wednesday’s matchup with Franklin County, recording a 21-2 victory in Rocky Mount. McKnight scored a game-high five goals, while Anna Nye totaled four goals, five assists and 12 more draws.

Nye also scooped up five ground balls, and Tadara Cooper finished with four. Elle Werner registered four saves between the pipes, while Ingram and McKnight each chipped in three draw controls.

RC showed off its depth in the contest, with 10 different players finding the back of the cage on attack and 14 Wildcats collecting at least one ground ball. Coach Nye was also pleased with the team’s passing through the midfield and on the offensive end against the Eagles (1-6).

“We had a solid game both on offense and defense,” the RC coach said. “This was our best game with finding the open player for assists. We also had great passing transitions.”

The Wildcats were slated to take on Jefferson Forest at home on Monday. RC will play host to E.C. Glass on Thursday as part of a lacrosse tripleheader celebrating 50 years of lacrosse in Lexington, with the varsity girls’ game set to follow the junior varsity and varsity boys contests. Action begins at 5 p.m.

On Monday, the RC girls will play host to Blacksburg, starting with the JV game at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity game scheduled to follow at 7.
