‘The Audience’ Coming To W&L Screen In May

W&L’s Lenfest Center’s Outreach & Engagement Series will present NTL’s Olivier and Tony Award-winning hit production, “The Audience,” on the Stackhouse cinema screen in Elrod Commons on May 5 at 7:30 p.m.

Directed by Stephen Daldry, the show features Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II.

Running time is 180 minutes with no interval. It is rated PG.

For 60 years, Queen Elizabeth II met with each of her 12 prime ministers in a private weekly meeting. This meeting is known as The Audience. From Winston Churchill to Margaret Thatcher and David Cameron, the queen advised her prime ministers on matters both public and personal. Through these private audiences, we see glimpses of the woman behind the crown and witness the moments that shaped a monarch.

Peter Morgan’s Netflix phenomenon “The Crown” was based on this hit play. It was captured live from the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End in 2013 and went on to become one of the mostwatched National Theatre Live productions.

Tickets prices are $20 for general admission; and $8 for students. Online ticket sales are available at https://my.wlu.edu/lenfest-center/the-audience.

Tickets can also be bought the night of the performance onsite at the Stackhouse Theater. The box office is open for in-person sales Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is accessible only when undergraduate classes are in session. Patrons can contact the box office by calling (540) 458.8000 or emailing [email protected].

The National Theatre Live is sponsored in part by Class of ’64 Performing Arts Fund.
