The Chamber Singers of Southern Virginia University will present their final concert of the 2026–2027 season, “The Light Within,” on Tuesday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m. at Lexington Presbyterian Church. Admission is free.
Marking the inaugural installment of the ensemble’s new Masterworks Series, “The Light Within” brings together a compelling program of choral-orchestral repertoire that reflects on one of humanity’s most enduring truths: light overcomes darkness. In a world that can often feel uncertain, this concert offers a message of hope, resilience, and renewal — celebrating both the light within us and the light that surrounds us.
The program features music by a diverse array of composers, including Carlos Cordero, C.J. Madsen and William Grant Still, alongside two major masterworks: “Gloria” by Antonio Vivaldi and “Illuminare” by Elaine Hagenberg. Together, these works trace a musical journey from introspection to radiance, culminating in a vibrant expression of joy and illumination.
This special performance is presented in collaboration with the SVU Camerata Orchestra and will feature guest mezzo-sopranos Laurel Elizabeth Hofer and Mackenzie Romriell. The concert will be conducted by Dr. Benjamin Gaughran and Dr. Jakob Hofer, and will showcase the full music faculty of Southern Virginia University, highlighting the depth of artistry and collaboration within the department.
“This program is about more than beautiful music,” said Dr. Gaughran. “It’s about reminding ourselves — nd our audience—that even in the darkest moments, light persists. It grows, it spreads, and ultimately, it prevails.”
