April 13, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: Don’t be fooled —misinformation is being spread by conservative Political Action Committees and our own Republican representative, Ben Cline. Their tactics are clear to those who understand why this redistricting referendum exists. If you’re confused, their campaign is working. It’s vital to educate ourselves about the history and reasons behind this effort.
When President Trump directed Republican-led states like Texas to redraw congressional districts to secure partisan advantage, long-standing rules ensuring fair representation for all voters were upended. These changes differ sharply from past calls for nonpartisan redistricting by leaders such as Governor Spanberger or President Obama — both made their statements before widespread Republican gerrymandering began.
Now, Virginians must act to restore fairness nationwide. Republican-designed districts strengthen their hold on power while diminishing the voices of communities of color, who often support policies that promote equality and opportunity.
The Rev. Dr. Cozy Bailey, president of the NAACP Virginia State Conference, stated, “The NAACP strongly supports voting YES on the Redistricting Referendum, which is vital for preserving the voting power of Black Virginians.” He condemned the “manipulative mailers from MAGA-aligned groups seeking to discourage Black voters.” This referendum directly challenges efforts to distort representation and entrench conservative dominance before the upcoming elections.
We cannot allow such discriminatory tactics to stand. Supporting this referendum means standing for fair representation. Vote yes!
This redistricting will end with the next census in 2030 as all districts will be redrawn as usual.
