‘We Will Be Even More Divided’ If Redistricting Succeeds

April 9, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: There is a quote that “All Politics Is Local.” I believe that.

The election on April 21, 2026, may determine the possible redistricting of our federal congressional districts.

The Democrat Party has the power in our state government at present. The major and most important issue currently facing us is the question of redistricting. Democrats have cleverly worded the voting ballot to indicate that this election is about “fairness” and is only “temporary.” That is not true.

The issue of fairness stems from the attempts to redistrict areas of Texas, North Carolina and other states. Democrats quietly pass on mentioning California, Illinois and many other blue states who have done the same to favor their voting districts.

We live in Virginia. We are not responsible for what others choose to do with their own elections. Currently we have six Democrat leaning districts and five that favor Republicans. Seems fair to me. Democrats wish to change the district map so it would create 10 Democrat leaning districts and one Republican district. I cannot see this as a fair map. We also know that any government action is rarely temporary.

I am disappointed that my Democrat friends are in favor of this redistricting because they have a dislike of our president. They are casually willing to throw all conservatives under the bus to satisfy their intense hatred of one man. A yes vote on this issue will disenfranchise more than 40% of the state population and take away conservative voices. Is that fair?

We should be able to live in harmony with all our neighbors and friends regardless of our political views. Our society is severely divided with no easy answer to fixing that problem. We must continue to live together in our local communities and be willing to discuss and debate our differences and then remain friends.

This redistricting issue is local. If it passes, we will be even more divided than we currently are, and our local communities will suffer unnecessarily. Please vote no by April 21. MICHAEL YOUNG Kerrs Creek
