With a balanced scoring performance, the Rockbridge County High School boys lacrosse team earned a 12-6 road win over Franklin County on Monday of last week in Rocky Mount.
With the win, the Wildcats improved to 2-1, while Franklin County fell to 0-5.
Andrew Kelly led RC with three goals, while Grayden Brown, Matthew Hamilton, Miles Holland and Pat Looney each scored two goals. Looney also dished out an assist, and Parker Flint had a goal and an assist.
“I thought it was a good team effort,” said RC head coach Davey Jones. “I think the scoring reflects that.”
The Wildcats, whose game at Albemarle the previous Wednesday was canceled due to thunderstorms, started the game well against Franklin County. RC took a 5-1 lead and then “got a little sloppy” as the Eagles cut into the lead, said Jones. “There are areas we need to clean up. There’s definitely room for improvement.”
After the Eagles scored a few goals, the Wildcats picked up their offense and finished strong.
“It’s always good to go to Franklin County and win because they always play us tough,” said Jones.
In goal, RC senior Chase Pooley made eight saves.
The Wildcats were scheduled to play host to Patrick Henry on Monday and will have a rematch with Franklin County at home today, Wednesday, starting with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity game scheduled to follow at 7.
RC will start next week with two road games. The Wildcats will play at Jefferson Forest on Monday, starting with JV action at 4:30 p.m., before visiting The Covenant School in Charlottesville on Tuesday, with the varsity game only at 5:45 p.m.
