New Piece By Del Vecchio Part Of Program

The Rockbridge Symphony will complete its 51st season on Saturday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. at Lexington Presbyterian Church, with a varied program entitled “Song of the Earth” that brings together a beloved symphonic work, a Baroque concerto featuring solo oboe, and the premiere of a new composition by a local composer.

The program is anchored by Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” by Antonín Dvořák, a work that has resonated with American audiences since the late 19th century. Written during Dvořák’s time in the United States, the symphony reflects his impressions of American musical traditions, with shifting moods, tempos, and textures that continue to feel both expansive and deeply personal.

The concert will also feature the Oboe Concerto in C minor by Benedetto Marcello, a cornerstone of the oboe repertoire. Principal oboist Doug Lane will be featured as soloist in this expressive and enduring Baroque work, which is sometimes attributed to Marcello’s brother, Alessandro.

Rounding out the program is the world premiere of a newly orchestrated Divertimento by local composer Peter Del Vecchio. Originally conceived as a duet for a student’s Bar Mitzvah, the piece has been reimagined for full orchestra. Del Vecchio describes it as “a fun ride from start to finish,” blending lively 18th-century counterpoint with Sephardic and Middle Eastern-inspired modes, with multiple melodic lines weaving together throughout.

A pre-concert talk with Artistic Director Matt Mainella will begin at 6:45 p.m., offering additional insight into the evening’s music.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students, and free for children ages 12 and under. They are available at Sugar Maple Trading Company, Cheese to You, Artists in Cahoots, and University Florist in downtown Lexington; online at https:// www.rockbridgesymphony. org/; and at the door.

Founded in 1975, the Rockbridge Symphony is a community orchestra dedicated to bringing live classical music to the region. Under the direction of Dr. Matthew Mainella, the orchestra brings together local musicians who share a love of music and a commitment to performing for their neighbors.
