Led by strong pitching and fielding and timely hitting, the Rockbridge County High School softball team earned a 6-0 home win over Shenandoah District rival Riverheads on Tuesday evening in Lexington.
The Wildcats (5-2 overall, 4-2 district), coming off a 26-0 district road victory over Staunton on Monday, scored three runs in the second inning and added three runs in the fifth.
Senior Sadie Moore pitched a complete game for RC, striking out 10 while allowing five hits and no walks.
After loading the bases in the second, RC took a 1-0 lead when Bella Dorey singled on a line drive to right field to bring home Kayleigh Rosson. Page Wright then singled on a line drive to right field to bring home Lilly Thomas and Brooklyn Beverly, extending the Wildcats’ lead to 3-0.
In the fifth, Willow Rogers singled on a hard grounder to right field to drive in Brooke Hostetter and Moore, and Rogers scored RC’s final run when Lilly Thomas singled on a line drive to center field.
The Wildcats racked up 10 hits, led by Hostetter with three and Thomas with two. Riverheads (4-5, 1-5) recorded five hits, led by Sadie Poole with two.
For the Gladiators, Hattie Croft pitched the first two innings, surrendering five hits, two walks and three runs (one earned). Emmy Fitzgerald came to the mound for the final four innings, striking out seven while allowing five hits, one walk and three earned runs.
Riverheads committed one error, while RC had none.
The Wildcats will continue district action at Fort Defiance on Thursday at 6 p.m.
