Applicants Sought For Interim Supervisor Position

Registered voters of the Walkers Creek magisterial district who are interested in serving as interim supervisor for that district have until next Wednesday, April 15, to submit an application.

The Walkers Creek seat on the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors is vacant because the person who was elected to this position this past November, Jay Lewis, did not take the oath of office within the required period to legally take office.

The oversight was discovered when bond counsel was conducting due diligence for a bond sale that would have financed construction of a proposed community recreation center. The county attorney determined that the Walkers Creek seat had been vacant since Jan. 12, the date for the Board’s first meeting of the year. Approval of the bond sale was subsequently deemed invalid and a revote, absent the participation of a Walkers Creek supervisor, failed on a 2-2 tie vote.

Authority for making the appointment to fill the vacancy on an interim basis rests with the judges of the 25th Judicial Circuit, who announced Tuesday that they are seeking applicants from interested, qualified individuals.

To be eligible for appointment, a person must be a registered voter of the Walkers Creek district, have resided in Rockbridge County for at least 30 days, and not hold any public office prohibited from being held simultaneously with a seat on the Board of Supervisors under Virginia law. If appointed, the interim supervisor will be required to file a statement of economic interests under the Virginia Conflict of Interests Act before being sworn in, and to complete a VOIA training module within 60 days of taking office.

The interim supervisor will hold office with the full authority of an elected Board member, casting votes and participating fully in all Board business, until the winner of the Nov. 3, 2026, special election qualifies and takes office.

Interested persons should submit a completed application form and a current resume or statement of qualifications by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15. Application forms are available from Sandra Hartley, judicial assistant, from the Rockbridge County administrator’s office, and on the Rockbridge County official website www. co.rockbridge.va.us.

Applications can be submitted by email to shhartley@vacourts. gov or by mail to Sandra Hartley, judicial assistant, Circuit Court of Rockbridge County, 20 S. Randolph St., Lexington, VA 24450, or Michelle Trout, clerk of the court, Circuit Court of Rockbridge County, 20 S. Randolph St., Lexington, VA 24450.
