Unemployment in the Rockbridge area began a slow decline, dropping from a high of almost 20 percent during the height of the national recession in 1975 to 13.5 percent. - Visitors from Australia were in Lexington for a lacrosse match with W&L. The Aussies lost to the Generals, but they won a lot of hearts while “billeting” with local families. - Parry McCluer High School announced the names of the valedictorian and salutatorian. They were Andrea Denise Ogden and Franklin Eugene Williams Jr.

Some 10,000 Virginia Power costumers were left in the dark after a severe thunderstorm, which brought high winds and hail to the area. . - Lexington City Council voted to advertise a tax rate increase of up to 11 cents per $100 of assessed property value. - Walmart was evacuated after gas from some roofing materials got into the store’s ventilation system. Three people overcome by the fumes were taken to the hospital.
