March 30, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: The reason to vote yes for the temporary redistricting plan is because right now Trump is free to do anything he wants with very few restraints - ignoring the constitution and the rule of law while exhibiting not a shred of humanity. There needs to be a balance of power.
Normally Congress serves as a “check and balance” on presidents, but the Republicans simply are not performing this essential part of their job. Having seen Trump’s anger at and vindictive treatment of anyone who does not agree with him, they are afraid.
We need a balance of power in the House and Senate also to ensure free and fair elections. That’s the only way to keep Trump from driving this country over a cliff morally, ethically and financially.
He has embellished the White House with 24-karat gold - even the door frames. Who is paying for that - you are. He dug up the Rose Garden and replaced it with a patio. Who is paying for that - you are. He has torn down the east wing of the White House to build a ballroom the size of a football field. Where’s the billionaires’ money?
Most importantly, he has started a war in Iran just to divert attention away from the Epstein files. Iran posed no threat, as they were incapable of attacking us. This war is costing the lives of our soldiers and also 110-168 Iranian children and staff at a primary school. Trump fired all the generals with knowledge and experience who could have provided excellent advice. Trump replaced them with a clueless Fox New host. This war is costing $600-$890-million-plus per day. Who is paying for that, you are. So voting yes is the only hope we have to restrain Trump in the future. LINDA S. BLACK Glasgow
