Brown Should Be Appointed Supervisor

Brown Should Be Appointed SupervisorA

pril 2, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: Here is an argument for why our legal system should not grant a judge the power to select a county supervisor.

A county supervisor is picked by voters. If a vacancy occurs, our system needs to refer back to the choicemakers. Either an immediate special election is held, or the next highest vote getter assumes the office until the next regular election. A county supervisor arises from the democratic process of voting, not from an appointment by another government entity.

Toria Brown was the next highest vote getter and is closest to the intent of the voters. No judge should be empowered to diminish the remaining reservoir of popular support for a vote that expressed the original will of the people. Brown should be the only choice to hold this office until the next election. DON HENKE Goshen
