In a rematch of last year’s Class 4 state championship game, the Rockbridge County High School girls lacrosse team came up short 8-5 against threetime defending state champion Western Albemarle on Tuesday of last week.
The Wildcats (2-1) started the game well, with Anna Nye completing a crease roll and scoring. Several minutes later, Lola Mulitalo, RC’s leading scorer this season, suffered a cross-check on her back. She was able to return during the second half and scored three goals in the fourth quarter.
It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Wildcats got into their groove, scoring three goals quickly, but Western (2-0) then began stalling the ball.
The Wildcats won the battle of draw controls, 10-5, with Nye winning eight draws.
RC head coach Susan Nye said the Wildcats’ defense “was solid, with slides and [one-on-one] stops.” Anna Nye led the Wildcats with four caused turnovers.
It was the first meeting between the two teams since Western defeated the Wildcats 14-4 in the state finals last June.
The Wildcats were scheduled to play at home against Christiansburg on Monday and will play host to Albemarle today, Wednesday, with the varsity game following the 5:45 p.m. junior varsity game between RC and Lord Botetourt. After spring break next week, the Wildcats will return to action at Patrick Henry on Monday, April 13, at 6 p.m.
