The Rockbridge County High School girls tennis team dropped a trio of Shenandoah District matches last week, falling at Fort Defiance before losing at home against Wilson Memorial and Waynesboro. The losses dropped the Wildcats to 0-5, both overall and in the district.
On Monday of last week, Fort Defiance (4-0 overall, 3-0 district) cruised to a 9-0 victory.
The Wildcats then faced Wilson Memorial (1-2 overall and district) last Wednesday and lost 6-3. In singles, RC’s Claire Taylor won 8-3 at No. 5, and Jade Newhall won 8-0 at No. 6. At No. 3 doubles, sisters Claire and Charlotte Taylor earned an 8-1 victory.
The Wildcats concluded the week with a 5-2 loss to Waynesboro (3-0 overall and district). RC’s Mila Baker battled for a comeback win at No. 4 singles, claiming a 9-8 (7-3 tiebreak) victory. At No. 3 doubles, Newhall and Charlotte Taylor won 8-4. Two of the singles matches were stopped due to darkness, with Charlotte Taylor losing 6-4 at No. 5 and Jade Newhall winning 5-2 at No. 6. Although the team result has been decided, RC and Waynesboro will conclude those matches when they meet again at Waynesboro on Monday, April 27.
The Wildcats were scheduled to play at Alleghany on Monday and will continue district action at Stuarts Draft next Monday. All matches are scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
