ConnectionsPlus Starts New Dementia Care Program

ConnectionsPlus Healthcare + Hospice has launched Companions in Connection, a new dementia care support program.

Sessions, which began last week, will be held twice monthly, on the second and fourth Thursdays, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. in Kendal Hall.

This expansion builds on the success of the organization’s existing dementia care support program, Care Companions, offered in partnership with VPAS at the Maury River Senior Services building in Buena Vista. The Care Companions program meets on the first and third Thursdays of each month from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Offered under the Advanced Illness Care umbrella, the new Companions in Connection program at Kendal strengthens access to high quality dementia support for families across the Rockbridge region, said a spokesperson.

Designed to support both caregivers and individuals living with dementia, Companions in Connection provides a structured, parallel experience that promotes connection, support, and overall, well being.

The biweekly group sessions provide consistent connection, shared discussion, and practical support for both caregivers and participants. During each meeting, individuals living with dementia take part in guided engagement activities facilitated by trained ConnectionsPlus team members, with a focus on maintaining strengths, building confidence, and fostering meaningful social interaction.

At the same time, caregivers receive dedicated support from social workers, who offer education, resource navigation, and a welcoming space to share experiences, receive guidance, and build community.

Edwina Addison‑Vita, AIC operations director, commented, “Through our collaboration with Kendal and ConnectionsPlus, the Companions in Connection program provides meaningful engagement for participants and dedicated support for caregivers. With added involvement from students and volunteers, each session builds connection, strengthens relationships, and helps foster a real, thriving community.”
