A fire last Thursday night destroyed a residence in Goshen, leaving a family displaced and one dog dead, according to local officials.
Crews were dispatched at 8:06 p.m. to 55 Old Alleghany Circle, a home owned by Wayne Wilhelm. Firefighters with the Goshen Volunteer Fire Department arrived to find heavy fire throughout the single-story structure and brought the blaze under control, according to Rockbridge County Fire-Rescue Chief Nathan Ramsey.
No human injuries were reported. Wilhelm’s girlfriend, her two children and a dog were living in the home and were able to escape safely, Goshen Fire Chief Mike Jolley said. The home is considered a total loss, and the American Red Cross is assisting the family.
The cause of the fire was determined to be related to an electric heater in a bathroom, said Ramsey. Crews remained on scene for approximately two hours and 45 minutes.
Assisting agencies included the Goshen Rescue Squad, Rockbridge Baths Fire Department, Kerrs Creek Fire Department, Craigsville Fire Department, Millboro Fire Department and Rockbridge County Fire-Rescue.
In the aftermath of the fire, the Goshen Volunteer Fire Department is collecting donations to assist the displaced family, which is currently staying in a hotel. Needed items include clothing for two women and two men, as well as dog supplies and gift cards. Because the family is staying in a hotel, officials noted that perishable food items may not be practical.
Those interested in helping are encouraged to contact the Goshen Volunteer Fire Department for more information on how to donate.
