Lexington City Manager John Doane announced the appointment of Capt. James Kirby as chief of police for the city. Kirby succeeded chief A.E. Rhodenizer who died Feb. 28. -A Xero mammography unit providing an improved method of detecting breast cancer was set to be installed at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. - Frank Johnson Gilliam, dean of students at Washington and Lee University, died at the age of 80. His career at W&L began in 1926.
