Members of the Lexington Fire Department were honored at the department’s annual banquet on Feb. 28.
Five awards, which were voted on by the recipient’s peers, were handed out.
The Gene Bare Firefighter of the Year went to firefighter/ EMT Leyton Wormser. He started as a volunteer with the department about three years ago and became full-time career firefighter about a year ago.
Chase Groah, one of the department’s original hires in 2011 with the first career staff, received the Alton Swink Outstanding Fireman award.
Receiving the Weldon Tolley EMS Provider of the Year award was firefighter/ medic Justin Cheatham, who has been with the LFD since 2016 as career staffer.
Lt. Wes Harlow, who has been with the department since 2019, received the J. Henry Sorrels Officer of the Year.
The fifth award, the Arthur Wallace Rookie of the Year Award, went to firefighter/ EMT David Lawhorne, who has volunteered with the department for two years.
The department also announced two EMS awards for cardiac arrest saves.
One of the awards went to a crew comprised of J. Dorr, J. Schindler, M. Tulupov, M. Gradilla-Alvarez, T. Roberts, and the Virginia Military Institute crew including Dylan Holbach and Mike Tulipov.
Answering the second call that was recognized were J. Nicely, J. Cheatham, S. Amos, G. Hoback, C. Groah and T. Roberts.
