Two Others Flown To UVA
A woman and a young boy died in an early morning house fire Friday in Vesuvius.
A man and another young boy were airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center for treatment following the blaze, which was reported at 2:44 a.m. at a residence in the 300 block of Tye River Turnpike, near the Osceola Mill Country Inn & Cabin.
A spokesman for the Virginia State Police, which is investigating the incident, reported Tuesday afternoon that the two who died in the fire were a 32-year-old female and a 4-year-old boy. A 2-year-old boy and a 43-year-old male remain hospitalized and are in a medically induced coma to help with the healing process, he said.
“The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the [investigating state police] agent is waiting to interview the adult male when he can to determine what was located in two areas of the home that are believed to be where the fire originated,” the VPS spokesman said.
Rockbridge County Fire Chief Nathan Ramsey said fire crews remained on the scene until about 8 a.m. Friday. A landing zone for the medical helicopters was established at the Vesuvius ball fields.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Raphine Fire Company, South River Fire Department, Rockbridge Baths Fire Department, Kerrs Creek Fire Department, Lexington Fire Department, Fairfield Rescue Squad and the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office. Units from Augusta County, including Riverheads and Middlebrook, also assisted.
This was the first fatal house fire in the Rockbridge area since January 2023 when a woman died after being rescued from a burning house in Fairfield.
