Writer Truman Capote was in Lexington to give a talk at Washington and Lee University. He also read from his short story “A Christmas Memory.” -No action was taken by Buena Vista City Council to pay a bill of $22,226.17 submitted by Vepco. - Fire truck No. 1 for Rockbridge County arrived at the Lexington Fire Department. The 1975 pumper’s price tag was over $30,000.

Lexington Public Works employees Stanley Dudley and Nathan Pooley were forced to jump from their city-owned truck when the brakes failed on Shop Road. -A vigil was held in front of the Rockbridge County Courthouse to mark the third anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. - VDOT began a project to correct a curve at the northbound Interstate 81 bridge over the U.S. at Exit 180 at Fancy Hill. The curve was believed to have been a factor in a number of accidents on that stretch of road including two fatalities.
