Ukrainian Journalist To Speak At W&L

Tetiana Sylina, an awardwinning Ukrainian journalist and senior editor at a leading Kyiv newspaper, will deliver a lecture at Washington and Lee University on at 7 p.m. next Tuesday, March 24, in the Northern Auditorium of Leyburn Library.

Ref lect ing on the toll of war, Sylina notes, “We’re all exhausted; everyone is tired, but the war continues. This winter was the hardest yet. It was costly, but Ukraine endured.”

As Ukraine enters the fifth year of the full- scale invasion, she argues that the consequences extend well beyond its borders. The war’s outcome, she contends, will shape European security, democratic resilience, and the global balance of power.

In “Exhausted, in the Cold and Darkness: Why Ukrainians Are Unbroken,” Sylina draws on her reporting and personal experience to examine daily life under sustained attack — from energy blackouts and brutal winters to the emotional strain on civilians and journalists. She also highlights the endurance of Ukrainian society, emphasizing solidarity, institutional adaptability, and continued resistance.
