On Saturday, Feb. 28, 12 elementary students and five middle school students from the Lexington City Schools competed in the 2026 Mickey Owens Memorial Tournament in Roanoke.

Waddell Elementary School was represented at the tournament by the following students: Wesley Kozak, Jack Heilpern, Henry Rahl, Rose Hierman, Tarron Gaughran, William Loughhead, Aiden Adkins, Owen Smith, Graham Davis, Nora Ingersoll, Alice Ingersoll and Sawyer Fox. Sawyer Fox and Henry Rahl turned in exceptional performances, with both finishing in the top 10. As a team, Waddell finished in second place.

Representing Lylburn Downing Middle School were Gibson Fox, Caleb Rodocker, Lilianne King, Luca Favero and Harry Loughhead, with Fox, Loughhead, Rodocker and Favero all finishing in the top 10. Gibson Fox particularly distinguished himself by finishing with a perfect score of four wins out of four games (taking second place by virtue of the tournament’s tie-break rules). LDMS finished in first place as a team by a wide margin.
