With an impressive second half, the Washington and Lee University women’s basketball team overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat Bethel University (Minn.) 75-67 in the Sweet 16 on Friday night at W&L’s Holekamp Gym in Lexington.
In front of a large crowd, Bethel (24-7) led 17-15 after the first quarter and extended its lead to 35-27 at halftime, but the Generals (31-0) outscored the Royals 25-16 in the third quarter to take a 52-51 lead before putting the game away in the fourth quarter.
W&L’s Mary Schleusner led all players with 20 points and 17 rebounds, while teammate Icy Keneah scored 10 points and grabbed four boards. Emily Erickson led Bethel with 13 points.
In the quarterfinals on Saturday night, the Generals will play host to Denison (27-2), which cruised to an 86-67 win over John Carroll (26-5) earlier on Friday night in Holekamp Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
