Strickler Running For Congress

Rockbridge area native Matt Strickler is running for Congress. Strickler, who served as secretary of Natural and Historic Resources under former Gov. Ralph Northam, is one of seven candidates seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination to run for Virginia’s Second District.

The district covers parts of Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore. The incumbent is Republican U.S. Rep. Jen Kiggans of Virginia Beach. Strickler lives in Northampton County on the Eastern Shore.

Because of the uncertainty over redistricting, the primaries that will determine party nominees in the Nov. 3 Virginia congressional elections have been postponed from June 16 to Aug. 4.

Strickler attended public schools in the Rockbridge area and graduated from Rockbridge County High School and Washington and Lee University. He holds master’s degrees in public policy and marine science from the College of William and Mary and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.

He is the son of Mike and Doris Strickler. His father retired from the position of assistant to the superintendent of Virginia Military Institute and his mother is a retired Buena Vista city schools art teacher.
