W&L Women Advance
The Washington and Lee University women’s basketball team cruised to a 73-44 win over St. Mary’s College of Maryland in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament on Friday before earning a 61-55 win over Christopher Newport University in the second round on Friday. Both games took place at W&L’s Holekamp Gym in Lexington.
The third-ranked Generals (30-0) will play host to Bethel University (Minn.) (24-6) in the Sweet 16 on Friday at 8 p.m. If they win, they’ll play host for the quarterfinals on Saturday at 8 p.m.
Against St. Mary’s (23-6), Mary Schleusner led W&L with 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Sarah Zimmerman scored eight points and pulled down eight boards. Zou Raine chipped in seven points, Quinn McGuinness led W&L with seven assists and scored six points, and Elka Prechel added six points.
On Saturday, the Generals survived a tough test against No. 14 Christopher Newport (24-5).
Sarah Zimmerman led all scorers with 12 points and eight boards while dishing out a game-high six assists and four blocks. Generals Megan Zimmerman and Riley Bryant each added ten points off the bench, with Megan knocking down four of her five shots, including two triples. Schleusner led W&L with 11 rebounds and three steals and had two blocks to go along with seven points.
After Schleusner went to the bench with her third foul in the third quarter, five different Generals scored to close the quarter. CNU was limited to one field goal over a six-minute stretch.
