Second Sheetz Planned For County

Super 8 Motel Will Be Razed For Project

A second Sheetz convenience store and gas station is coming to the Rockbridge area. The new one is planned for north of Lexington at 1139 N. Lee Highway.

The site is at the northwest corner of the U.S. 11 (North Lee Highway) intersection with Va. 39 (Maury River Road), where a Super 8 motel is presently located. The motel is to be razed to make way for the new development.

A site plan review of the proposal is slated to be held today, Wednesday, March 4, by the Rockbridge County Tourism Corridor Overlay Review Board, during its meeting in the county administration building that begins at 4 p.m.

The plan calls for erecting a 4,959-square-foot building with a gas canopy and six dispensers. The existing entrances from U.S. 11 and Va. 39 to the 2.085-acre property will be retained. Forty-three parking spaces are planned. The land is zoned B-1, general business, which makes the proposal a by-right use.

A submittal package on the plans was received by the county in December from Ryan Gatewood, PE, PMP, of LE&D Professionals PC Engineers & Landscaping of Danville. The proposed project, according to an accompanying letter, is to consist of “demolition, erosion control installation, clearing and grubbing, grading, minor retaining wall construction, building construction, paving and stabilization of all disturbed areas.”

There is currently a Sheetz at 600 E. Nelson Street in Lexington. A Wawa convenience store and gas station is under construction just east of Lexington on the north side of U.S. 60 (East Midland Trail). -Another development project that the TCO review board reviewed recently is a Wish Wash car wash that is to be constructed on a vacant lot on the east side of U.S. 11, north of the East Lexington bridge, between Store Lexington LLC and the offices of Rockbridge Health and dentist Dr. Robert Hull. A site plan for the development was approved.

Plans for a facelift of the Keydet General Motel, 325 W. Midland Trail, were also reviewed by the TCO review board, which approved a new freestanding sign and updated exterior color scheme. The hotel is undergoing a general refurbishment and all 53 rooms are expected to be available for guests in the fall.

Fincastle Baptist Church, which has been holding services in the VFW 1499 building at 105 Memorial Lane, just off of U.S. 60, west of Interstate 81, presented plans for the placement of a double- wide building behind the VFW building.

It will replace a single-wide building and won’t be visible from the street. The TCO review board approved the site plan for the project. The doublewide is to be used for classrooms.
