Susan Ford, daughter of President Gerald Ford, was in Lexington to attend the Fancy Dress Ball at Washington and Lee University. Secret Service men were on hand to ensure her safety as she danced the night away. - While young people enjoyed summer-like temperatures, older residents worried about budding fruit trees and the ongoing drought. - Lexington Police Chief Albert Eugene Rhodenizer, 52, died of a heart attack at his home. Capt. J.A. Kirby was named acting chief.

Circuit Court Judge Everett Martin gave Lexington and the county an additional six months to finalize an acceptable alternative plan for the new Lexington/ Rockbridge County Courthouse. - The Maury Service Authority faced $8.6 million in wastewater treatment plant upgrades needed to meet new regulations imposed by the state as part of the effort to clean up the Chesapeake Bay. - Virginia Horse Center officials were optimistic that state budget conferees would look kindly upon the horse center’s financial needs, both in the short and long term.
