Blues Defeat Auburn In Regional Semis, Earn Return Trip To State Tournament

The Parry McCluer High School boys basketball team punched its ticket to the Class 1 state tournament with a 75-58 win over Auburn in the Region 1C semifinals on Friday night at Pulaski County High School in Dublin.

In the Region 1C championship game on Saturday afternoon at the same location, the Fighting Blues (22-3), the top seed from the Pioneer District, will face Fort Chiswell (21-5), the top seed from the Mountain Empire District. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m., and admission is $10.

Against Auburn (13-12), a team the Blues had beaten 60-55 in last year’s Region 1C semifinas and twice during the regular season this winter, PM jumped out to a 23-8 lead. The Eagles cut the lead to single digits in the second quarter, but the Blues finished the half strong and took a 46-31 lead into the second half. In the second half, the Blues stayed ahead and prevented Auburn from getting close.

The Blues, who made it to the Class 1 state quarterfinals last year, hope to capture the Region 1C title that eluded them last year, when George Wythe beat PM 75-57. In the other semifinal on Friday night, Fort Chiswell earned a 66-52 win over Grayson County (14-6), the third seed from the Mountain Empire District.

Check back here for the result of the Region 1C championship game. The Class 1 state quarterfinal matchups will be announced later this weekend, with the quarterfinals scheduled to take place on Tuesday.
