Surviving a back-and-forth battle, the Parry McCluer High School boys basketball team overcame Pioneer District rival Narrows 55-54 to win its third consecutive Pioneer District tournament championship on Friday night in Buena Vista.
Junior guard Langston Cook led the top-seeded Fighting Blues (20-3 overall, 10-0 district) with 33 points and hit the winning free throw. After the game, Cook was named Pioneer District player of the year. Cook shot well early, scoring 14 points in the first quarter, when he knocked down four 3-pointers.
The second-seeded Green Wave (14-7, 6-3) led 31-30 at the half after Sam McGlothlin made a layup at the buzzer, and the game remained close the rest of the way.
Nathan Glass scored 11 points for the Blues, and Quentin Rosser chipped in nine.
The Blues are scheduled to play host for a Region 1C quarterfinals game on Tuesday. Check back here for the time and opponent.
