The Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors considered endorsing Gov. Godwin’s plan for the state to purchase Natural Bridge. Under this proposal, Godwin would ask the General Assembly to float a bond issue that would allow the state to buy the 1,600-acre facility including the hotel, motor lodge and gate house.
--- Buena Vista City Council appropriated $40,000 to cover an expected deficit in the school’s budget. The deficit was caused by a cutback in state funds and the increased cost of natural gas.
--- Thieves made off with $2,000 in cash from a safe at Mick-or-Mack.

Making its largest investment for years in its Glasgow plant, Lees Commercial Carpets planned to spend $26.6 million to expand the manufacturing facility.
--- Seventy handbell ringers from six area churches participated in the sixth annual Rockbridge Area Handbell Festival at Lexington Presbyterian Church.
--- Children at Effinger Elementary School learned about life in the 1700s during a colonial day celebration. Some of the children dressed in colonial costumes while learning how to churn butter, make brooms and square dance.
