The McKee/Big Spring CemeteryAssociation is a nonprofit organization restoring a small cemetery in Kerrs Creek. The cemetery is an important site in the history of Rockbridge County, and Virginia, and, indeed, the United States as Kerrs Creek was the frontier of America in the 18th century.
The graveyard holds the remains of men involved in the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. The association had the one-acre site mapped with ground penetrating radar, thinking, from documentation they were privy to, that there were 68 burials. In fact, 106 were found, plus 25 headstones, most beneath six inches or so of sod that they’ve now starting to have reset and restored.
People and grants have been very generous but to get the cemetery back in top shape with the headstones repaired, a new fence, signage and parking, they are raising additional funds. If you’d like to help contribute, there are two possible ways: gofund.me/89d365dd or by way of check sent to the association chair, Pauline McKee, 1837 Back Creek Court, Asheboro, NC 27205.
