PM Junior Breaks Own School Record in 1600

Parry McCluer High School junior Kebryl Chandler broke his own school record in the boys’ 1600-meter run while claiming victory to lead four PM indoor track and field runners at the 63rd East Coast Invitational on Saturday in Virginia Beach.

Chandler finished first of 136 runners in 4:17.27, breaking his previous school record of 4:18.17, which he set at the VA Showcase meet held Jan. 16-17, also at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. Sussex’s Ryan Moody placed second on Saturday, finishing in 4:21.03.

PM senior Logan Wheelock placed 16th in the boys’ 1600-meter run in a personal-record (PR) time of 4:39.59, while junior teammate Sam Carpenter finished 60th in 4:58.42, a PR and his first time under five minutes. PM sophomore Sebastian George came in 78th in 5:04.83.

Chandler led the PM boys in the 1000meter run, placing eighth of 104 runners in 2:37.43. Wheelock finished 21st in a PR time of 2:46.92, while Carpenter came in 58th in 2:58.65, and George finished 74th in 3:07.46.

The Blues will prepare for the Region 1C meet, which will take place at Roanoke College’s Kerr-Cregger Field House in Salem on Saturday, Feb. 21. In addition to those qualified by time or distance, the top three individuals and top three relay teams will advance to the Class 1 state meet.
