Girls Zone 4 Qualifier This Weekend
The Rockbridge County High School wrestling team is scheduled to compete in the Shenandoah District tournament today, Wednesday, at Stuarts Draft High School.
Weigh-ins will be at 2 p.m., with fan entry at 3:30 p.m. before wrestling starts at 4. The top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the Region 3C tournament, which is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 14, at Rocktown High School in Harrisonburg.
In their first year in the Shenandoah District, following seven years in the Valley District, the Wildcats had the thirdbest record of nine teams, behind Alleghany and Riverheads. Last year, 11 Wildcats advanced to the Region 3C tournament.
The Wildcats, who went 9-7 in duals this season, were scheduled to wrestle in a district tri-meet at Waynesboro last Wednesday, but the meet was postponed due to hazardous travel conditions following the previous weekend’s winter storm. As of last weekend, the meet had not been rescheduled.
Guided by head coach Mike Wood, RC has a young team this year, with three seniors, two juniors, 10 sophomores and seven freshmen.
RC’s lone female wrestler, sophomore Tasha Shorter, will compete at 152-pounds in the girls Zone 4 Qualifier this weekend at Franklin County High School in Rocky Mount. The tournament, originally scheduled for last weekend, was rescheduled due to inclement weather. Shorter, who won her first three tournaments this season, has a record of 13-2 this winter.
The top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the Virginia High School Girls State Open Wrestling Championships which is scheduled for Feb. 24 and 25 at Henrico Sports & Events Center in Glen Allen. Last year, Shorter placed fourth at 152 in the girls’ Zone 3 Qualifier before going 1-2 in the state championships. Teammate Mia Marando, who graduated last spring, won at 138 in the Zone 3 Qualifier last year and placed sixth in the state for the second year in a row.
