W&L’s Schleusner Sets D3 Records
After breaking the NCAA Division III record for career rebounds and tying the record for double-doubles in a season, a record she would go on to break, Washington and Lee University women’s basketball player Mary Schleusner won her third consecutive Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the week award.
The award was for the week of Jan. 19-25, when Schleusner helped the Generals earn ODAC wins over Bridgewater College and Guilford College.
Schleusner, a 6-foot-1-inch senior who plays both the forward and center positions, averaged 25.5 points and 24.5 rebounds per game in the Generals’ wins over Bridgewater (63-57 at home on Jan. 21) and at Guilford (81-78 on Jan. 23). Against Bridgewater, Schleusner scored 22 points on 10-of-23 shooting while grabbing 21 boards and dishing out an assist with three blocks and two steals. Her 21 rebounds moved her past Jordan Holmes as the NCAA Division III all-time leading rebounder.
At Guilford, Schleusner scored 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting with 28 rebounds, marking her 15th double-double of the season which tied the Division III record at 83. Last Wednesday, Schleusner broke the record for doubledoubles in a season in the Generals’ 69-47 home win over ODAC rival Roanoke College. She led W&L with 17 points and 20 rebounds. She went on to record her 17th double-double of the season on Saturday when the Generals earned a 64-59 road win over ODAC foe Virginia Wesleyan University. In Saturday’s game, Schleusner led the Generals with 27 points and 16 rebounds.
The Generals, who ended the weekend ranked fifth in Division III, are undefeated at 19-0 this season and are 10-0 in the ODAC. Today, Wednesday, they’ll play host to ODAC rival Eastern Mennonite University at 7:30 p.m. at W&L’s Holekamp Gym.
